5th graders read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts through reading lessons. Each week explores a theme, genre study, or author study through the use of interactive read alouds. These highly engaging texts help students to build comprehension skills needed for our book clubs and independent reading.
In Grade 5, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); (2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume. Writing
5th graders participate in Writing Workshop. This workshop model provides students with opportunities to write all different types of writing. We will be focusing on opinion, argument and narrative writing which correlates with the new Common Core Standards. We also
The fifth grade science curriculum builds upon the principles of the Next Generation Science Standards. Our science classes focus on student investigation and discovery with an emphasis on moving through the scientific process. Further exploration takes place with our science resource teacher on a weekly basis.

The fifth grade social studies curriculum builds upon the principles of the Illinois Social Studies Standards. Our social studies classes focus on student inquiry and questioning while looking to develop an understanding of the connections between events. Fifth grade focuses on our nation's story, looking at the 13 Colonies, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution.
